“Cue-10″ is part of the one year anniversary party/benefit for DEVOTION gallery and 319 Scholes performance and gallery space: two wonderful galleries in Brooklyn NY.

“Cue-10″ uses found-objects and digital projection to create a sculpture that blurs the line of projection and object through geometry. The installation uses ceramic reflective micro beads that reinforce the illusion of real/projected geometry

Alien Acres Summer Camp, with 180 people attending this year. The photos and video below represent many many people’s creative work. I was focusing on outdoor projections, including fog and large screens. Jeanne, Sam, Zarah, Sima, Jeremy, and Lukas were also doing projections you see below. The big fire was Jen Upchurch’s FIGMENT temple from Gov. Island last year set ablaze.

Opto V

Opto V, part of FIGMENT’s sculpture park, is an interactive optical environment on Governors Island.

The installation will be accessible from early June through October 2010, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The installation is made of vinyl and mesh material, mounted on a frame that creates optical interference from the sun. Numerous optical building blocks encourage participants to play with light frefraction and reflection within the space, using the medium of sunlight.

The aluminum rooftop is punctured by a grid of holes. These holes transmit dots of light on the ground. As the earth turns, these dots will move; passing over the light objects, causing a constant play of light.

Qu Yuan Goes West

“Qu Yuan Goes West” (Chris Jordan, 2010) is an interactive light installation, allowing multiple participants to control light and movement using the iPhone’s interface. The installation utilizes computer, projector, mirrors, and motors. “Qu Yuan Goes West” examines the US/Chinese relationship; and how individual identity and capital (yuan) are transferred between nations. The title refers to the first ‘named’ Chinese poet Qu Yuan, as well as chinese currency (yuan).

The Performance Space

New School Jazz faculty member and alumnus Amir Ziv leads DROID in
concert. The ensemble features Amir Ziv on drums, Shahzad Ismaily on
bass, New School Jazz faculty member Adam Holzman on synthesizer, New
School Jazz alumnus Jordan McLean on trumpet and electronics, and
current New School Jazz student Sissy Clemens on vocals. With visuals
by Chris Jordan.

Amir Ziv is an acclaimed artist who has been shaping the downtown New
York City music scene for over 20 years. He has studied with some of the
most recorded and innovative drummers in cinematic, pop, and jazz music
history including Kenwood Dennard, Efrain Toro, Jim Priess, Joe
Chambers, Joe Porcaro, and Ralph Humphry. Adam Holzman worked with the
Miles Davis’ band from 1985 to 1989 as its musical director,
performing in more than 200 countries.

The concerts of Jazz Presents showcase distinguished New School for
Jazz and Contemporary Music faculty in collaboration with affiliated
artists and the stars of tomorrow – students and alumni of The New
School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.

This series is made possible by a grant from the New York State Council
on The Arts.

{R}ake at Monkeytown

{R}ake is a performance series of alternative and collaborative
electro-acoustic music and video. Performances range from pure improvisation
to more structured pieces, with video-artists and musicians working together
in exploratory ways.

Monkey Town is closing on January 24. Their curatorial mission and immersive
4-wall video setup made Monkey Town an important advocate of video in New
York City, and it’s really sad seeing it succumb to the real-estate BS
that’s doomed many other important alternative venues. We’re happy being
part of the final month and having a chance to say goodbye to the space.

Monkey Town serves dinner during the show, so come hungry. Seating is
limited — It’s a good idea to make reservations on their website

Ghost Chandelier

Working with the Rockwell Group, I designed a “Ghost Chandelier” effect for the 12 floors of the Ames Hotel in Boston. This optical illusion, called a “Pepper’s Ghost“, gives the impression that a chandelier is floating in the elevator lobby; as seen reflected in a mirror. This is achieved by ensconcing a physical chandelier inside the wall, with a two-way mirror. Because the alcove is lined with light absorbing material, only the chandelier is visible, creating the illusion.

The project is a permanent part of the Ames building, viewable from any of the 12 floors.
