G33k Xmas is a roughly-annual gathering of friends who are obsessed with technology and art. We get together and offer up our extra tech to anyone who shows up, and take home whatever we find useful. The conversation and curiosity around the different items makes this an amazing night of g33k fun.

Swapping technology, versus buying something new, allows us to try many different technologies out, hear about new ones (who knew vector displays can be hacked). It encourages the reuse and repurposing, instead of recycling or purchasing of technology.

Timelapses from G33k’s Past

May 2004

October 2004

May 2005

February 2010

What Has Been Swapped (very incomplete)

What people have brought in the past that other’s have taken (in no particular order or completeness): Tounge depressors, 8 track mixer, mics, digital still and video cameras, Color Kinetics lights, hand-held video games, PS1’s, laptops, slide projectors, cables of every hue, cd’s/dvd’s people have created, PDA’s, midi controllers and converters, motors, routers, Tivo(*4), laptops, graphics cards, amps, cd changers, 4-channel mixers, dj mixers, clocks, mice, headphones, burners (not the dusty people), tools, and many things I’m not sure have names….but were tremendously entertaining to try and figure out.

You’ve probably gotten too many emails from me about this. So I’ll keep it brief. I’ve curated a show of 20 artists working with the medium of time. Its a one night only screening this Tuesday in DUMBO at the amazing Galapagos Art Space. Over 1/2 the works are in HD, and look absolutely incredible.

Artists: Brad Emerson, Joel Schlemowitz, Caspar Stracke,	Kyle McDonald, Marci Macguffie, Dave Allen, Marco Brianza, Dave Coiffier Richard Lainhart, David B. Smith, Tony Schultz, Eden Orion, Neo Kekkonen, Freddie Wiss, Chris Harvey, James Ford, Jan Karel Lameer, Luke Dubois,
Jay Burlage, and myself.

7:00 – doors
8:30 – showtime
10:00 on – timelapses from the archive, music, and conversation

Luke’s piece Fashionably Late for the Relationship (72 minutes) will be installed through the evening.

Hope you can make it. If you can’t, but know of someone who’d find a time-art show compelling, please forward this on. This will be the only chance to see this work screened in its full resolution.

Galapagos Art Space, Dumbo. 8-Late. Free.
Come hang out, have a drink, stare at your reflection in the lake and wonder just what is the seating capacity of the space.. is it more or less than the old Williamsburg home? If there was a fire, would you jump in the water, or crush your way through the docks? Did they bring over the water from the old space in some druidic ritual, or just put a hose to it? All these questions and more will be answered. Someday.
